Contiki

Meet your fellow travellers over a welcome dinner at a local restaurant in Amman. Sharing a table offers an easy introduction to the people travelling with you and to Jordan’s capital.

Amman’s dining scene draws on the country’s tradition of generous hospitality. Settle into the conversation and enjoy the atmosphere of a city where contemporary cafés and restaurants sit alongside neighbourhoods shaped by centuries of history.

Explore Amman with a Local Guide, visiting the hilltop Citadel and Archaeological Museum before stepping inside the Roman Amphitheatre and Folklore Museum. These sites reveal the layers of history beneath Jordan’s busy modern capital.

At the Citadel, remains from different eras overlook the city’s densely built hills. The theatre recalls Amman’s Roman past, while the museums bring everyday objects and traditions into focus. Your guide connects the landmarks with the city around them.

Visit the Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Co-operative Society near Amman for a hands-on local activity and a lunch of Jordanian specialities. Meet the community behind a TreadRight-supported initiative focused on helping local women achieve financial independence.

The visit offers a closer look at the people and skills sustaining the co-operative. Alongside the shared meal, it is an opportunity to connect with contemporary Jordanian life through a project rooted in local enterprise and community.

Explore the Roman ruins of Jerash, walking among colonnaded streets, monumental plazas and temples in one of the region’s most striking ancient cities. Look out for Hadrian’s Arch, the Oval Forum and the Corinthian columns of the Temple of Artemis.

Known in antiquity as Gerasa, Jerash preserves the scale of a thriving Roman provincial city. Its stone-paved spaces make it possible to picture public life here, from ceremonial entrances to gatherings in the forum.

Share a home-style Jordanian lunch at Bait Al-Khairat in Jerash, where dishes such as maqluba, mansaf and sumac-seasoned musakhan may feature at the family-style table. The meal is served in a restored stone house dating from 1881.

Once a place for local gatherings, the house is now home to a women-led social enterprise supporting women and young people through food and community collaboration. The setting gives the meal a sense of place beyond the recipes themselves.

Walk the Shaq Al-Reesh Trail on an easygoing hike through Dana Nature Reserve. Follow rocky paths between rugged canyon walls, with open views across the valleys and time to take in the changing shapes of the landscape.

Dana protects a varied stretch of Jordanian wilderness, where steep terrain gives the walk a very different feel from the country’s ancient cities. A packed lunch keeps the focus on being outdoors for a few relaxed hours.

Share a Bedouin-style dinner at Ammarine Camp near Little Petra, gathering around the table for local flavours in a desert setting. The included camp stay makes the evening more than a meal, with time to experience the stillness beyond the city.

Bedouin hospitality has long been part of life in Jordan’s desert regions, where food and conversation bring people together. Step outside to take in the quiet sky and surrounding landscape before spending the night at camp.

Hike the backdoor route from Little Petra into Petra, following quieter desert paths framed by sandstone cliffs and broad views. The approach lets you experience the terrain surrounding the ancient city on foot, with changing rock colours and formations along the way.

Petra’s Nabataean builders worked with this landscape rather than against it, carving monuments into its sandstone. Entering by a less-travelled route gives a sense of the city’s remote setting and the scale of the country around it.

Explore Petra’s archaeological site and see why this sandstone city is among Jordan’s best-known landmarks. Walk through the historic setting and take time to photograph its rock-cut architecture as the stone shifts in colour with the light.

Petra was a centre of the Nabataean kingdom and an important crossroads for ancient trade. Its carved facades and surviving remains reveal the ambition of a city shaped by commerce, engineering and the desert landscape.

Ride through Wadi Rum in a Bedouin-led 4×4 on a two-hour journey among red sand and sandstone mountains. Stops include places such as Siq Um Tawaqi, ancient rock inscriptions and viewpoints overlooking the desert’s wide-open terrain.

The inscriptions offer glimpses of people who crossed and inhabited this landscape long before modern visitors arrived. Travelling with a Bedouin driver adds local perspective to a place defined as much by its human history as by its striking geology.

Spend a night in the Wadi Rum desert at Amber Camp, with mountain-and-sand views from your room’s private balcony. The camp provides spacious accommodation with air conditioning and a private bathroom, alongside a sun terrace and garden space.

Enjoy dinner at camp and take time to look out over the landscape as evening settles. Away from the bustle of the capital, the stay offers a comfortable way to experience Wadi Rum’s quiet and, when skies are clear, its stars.

Float in the Dead Sea during a resort stop at the Holiday Inn Dead Sea, with time for lunch and a dip in its unusually buoyant water. Lean back and feel the mineral-rich water hold you at the surface; no swimming skills are needed to enjoy the sensation.

Set in a deep rift valley, the Dead Sea has an exceptionally high salt concentration. The surrounding arid landscape and the peculiar ease of floating make this a distinctive change of pace from Jordan’s desert trails and archaeological sites.
