Embark on a physically active journey into the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, swimming and wading through chambers once used for Maya ceremonies. By lamplight, your specialist guide interprets pottery, offerings and the famed Crystal Maiden, whose calcified remains shimmer on the limestone floor.

This is a protected archaeological site with strict conservation protocols; group sizes and access points are carefully managed. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour, subject to local conditions and regulations.

Walk with a naturalist on a guided nature walk through savanna and lagoon-edge trails, scanning for herons, kingfishers and the seasonal jabiru stork. Listen for troupes of howler monkeys and rustling iguanas while learning how wetlands sustain Belize’s birdlife and village traditions.

Later, glide across mirror-calm water on a sunset boat trip, when light turns the reeds gold and the sanctuary quiets to soft wingbeats. Gain insight into Crooked Tree’s role as one of Belize’s earliest European settlements and cherish the tranquil wetlands atmosphere.

Travel by small craft on a boat ride on the New River Lagoon, passing lily pads and jungle banks alive with egrets, jacanas, and the occasional spider monkeys and crocodiles. Your guide interprets wildlife and river lore as the Maya world approaches.

Arrive at the Lamanai Archaeological Site—“Submerged Crocodile”—and explore plazas framed by ceiba trees. Ascend the High Temple (33m) for sweeping views over rainforest and lagoon, and trace Lamanai’s long continuity from classic Maya grandeur to colonial-era mission ruins.

Visit the grassroots Community Baboon Sanctuary to learn how local landowners protect riparian forest for black howler monkeys. Hear their resonant calls, spot family groups in the canopy, and discover Creole cultural ties to this conservation success story.

Continue to float through limestone caves on the Caves Branch River, drifting beneath cathedral-like vaults once revered as the Maya underworld of Xibalba. Headlamps reveal stalactites and glittering minerals as your guide shares mythology woven through Belize’s subterranean landscapes.

Explore the cool, breezy highlands of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, a striking counterpoint to the lowland jungle. Step inside the vast portal of Rio Frio Cave, where shafts of light illuminate boulders and a flowing stream within the karst.

Unwind at the granite swimming holes at Rio On Pools, where cascades carve natural basins ringed by pines. Your leader highlights how fire-adapted Caribbean pine thrives here, and why the reserve was established to safeguard this unique Belizean ecosystem.

Enter the Green Hills Butterfly Ranch, Belize’s largest exhibit, to observe morphos, owls and longwings at close range. In the immersive butterfly flight house, watch delicate wings catch the light as guides reveal each stage—from egg to chrysalis to adult.

Pause at the dedicated hummingbird viewing area, where ruby and emerald flashes hover over feeders. This lush pocket of forest doubles as a birding hotspot, offering patient photographers superb chances for crisp, detailed images.

Join a local family for a hands-on craft coffee experience in San Antonio, a Yucatec Maya village. Walk the smallholdings to handpick ripe coffee cherries, then try roasting and grinding before sipping a freshly brewed cup.

Learn how coffee fits into village livelihoods within a proud Yucatec Maya community. Conversations touch on farming traditions, language, and seasonal rhythms—adding rich cultural flavour to every aromatic pour.

Cross the Mopan River by hand-cranked ferry and walk into Xunantunich, a ceremonial center of plazas and palaces. Climb the El Castillo pyramid for a commanding view across forest canopy and riverside farms.

Admire friezes depicting celestial deities and serpents, and hear how this hilltop city once anchored trade routes along the Mopan River valley. Your guide interprets architecture, iconography, and restoration work that safeguards Belize’s Maya heritage.

Arrive in the hush of dawn for a sunrise tour of Tikal, a vast UNESCO World Heritage site where temple tops emerge above rainforest mist. The jungle’s morning chorus—toucans, motmots, and howler monkeys—sets a spine-tingling scene.

Walk grand plazas ringed by towering Maya pyramids, palaces and causeways while your expert guide unpacks dynastic power, astronomy and ritual life. Between carvings and courtyards, watch for howler and spider monkeys moving through the ceiba-dotted canopy.

Take a concise Belize City orientation, noting colonial wooden houses, the historic Swing Bridge, and venerable St. John’s Cathedral, the oldest Anglican church in Central America. Your leader sketches the city’s maritime past and Creole heritage.

Continue to the Travellers Liquors Heritage Center to learn about cane spirit traditions, the bottling line, and the beloved One Barrel label. A guided rum tasting rounds things off with smooth, vanilla-tinged sips and a dash of Belizean cocktail lore.

Board a local boat to snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve—“Little Channel” in Yucatec Maya—where a natural cut in the reef teems with parrotfish, angelfish, and grazing turtles. At Shark Ray Alley, calm waters reveal elegant rays and docile nurse sharks.

Guides brief reef etiquette and currents as you drift above tropical coral gardens in crystalline Caribbean seas. Part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, this protected habitat showcases biodiversity that has earned UNESCO World Heritage status.

Architecture spans early to late classic periods, offering a clear, close-quarters look at palatial living beyond the grand capitals. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; sunset light often casts beautiful relief across carved stone.

Join a hands-on bean-to-bar chocolate workshop, roasting cacao, hand-grinding nibs and tempering rich Belizean chocolate to mold your own bar. Along the way, taste varietals that express terroir from lowland farms to foothill plots.

Learn how cacao has long been prized in Maya culture—for ritual drinks, barter, and celebration—and how small producers sustain quality today. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour, with take-home treats as a sweet memento.

Arrive at your lodge within the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary and meet your Tour Director and travelling companions over a convivial welcome dinner. Sample Belizean favourites—think stewed chicken, rice and beans, and ripe plantains—while your leader outlines the adventures ahead and shares practical tips for the tropics.

Set beside lagoon and cashew groves, this gathering eases you into the rhythms of Belize. Expect warm hospitality and stories that bring the country’s diverse cultures to life, fostering a relaxed, small-group camaraderie from the very start.
