Additional information
Svalbard Fjords & Glacier Fronts by Zodiac
Discover the cliff-walled waterways of Svalbard on nimble Zodiac cruises, venturing beneath serrated peaks to approach calving glacier fronts where ice crackles and echoes across the fjord. With binoculars at the ready, scan for polar bears and walrus along floe edges while kittiwakes and guillemots wheel overhead in the Arctic light.
Conditions may lead into the wild reaches of Northwest Spitsbergen National Park, where your Expedition Team interprets geology, ecology, and the legacy of early trappers and explorers. Shore landings reveal tundra textures, delicate saxifrages, and the hush that defines Svalbard’s raw, high-latitude beauty.
Jan Mayen Landing & Beerenberg Volcano Views
Set foot—weather and surf permitting—on one of the North Atlantic’s most isolated outposts and go ashore on Jan Mayen. Walk across ash-toned lava slopes and mossy patches while taking in commanding vistas of Beerenberg volcano, the world’s northernmost active stratovolcano rising straight from the sea.
Learn why the island is a protected Important Bird Area, watching for flurries of little auks and fulmars over the swells. Your Expedition Team shares the island’s meteorological role and austere human history as you experience a place few travelers ever reach.
Scoresby Sund Zodiac Cruising & Tundra Walks
Explore the largest fjord system on Earth as you weave by Zodiac among towering icebergs whose sculpted blue spires reflect on mirror-calm waters. Step ashore for guided tundra walks, where dwarf birch, Arctic willow, and resilient lichens paint subtle color across ancient rock.
Listen for the exhale of whales in the fjord and watch for musk oxen on distant slopes as your Expedition Team explains East Greenland’s geology and seasonal rhythms. Each landing reveals a different facet of Scoresby Sund’s immensity—from silent berg gardens to broad valleys etched by ice.
Ittoqqortoormiit Community Visit, East Greenland
Visit Ittoqqortoormiit, among Greenland’s most remote communities, where bright houses dot a rocky peninsula between sea ice and sheer fjord walls. Stroll the waterfront and learn how Inuit culture and traditions adapt to the Arctic’s short summers and long, frozen winters.
Your Expedition Team offers context on subsistence practices, sled dogs, and supply cycles in this far-flung settlement. When available, locally made crafts provide a way to support the community. This respectful encounter offers a window into remote East Greenland lifestyle on the edge of the world.
Expedition Lectures & Citizen Science at Sea
Join immersive Expedition lectures in the onboard Science Center, where specialists bring Arctic geology, wildlife behavior, sea ice, and polar history to life with vivid storytelling and photography. Between sessions, scan the horizon with the team during bridge or deck watch for seabirds and whales across the Greenland Sea crossing.
Contribute to real research through Citizen Science projects—such as cloud observations, phytoplankton sampling, or seabird counts—helping scientists monitor a rapidly changing region while sharpening your own field skills.
Polar Sea Kayaking Experience (Svalbard or East Greenland)
Glide through Arctic stillness on a small-group sea kayaking outing led by expert polar kayak guides. In stable expedition kayaks, paddle among brash ice and berg reflections for a close-to-the-water perspective that amplifies every creak, drip, and seabird call.
Offered in select locations in Svalbard or Scoresby Sund, this experience is weather and ice dependent, with limited spaces. This is an optional experience at additional cost and is bookable on tour.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula Scenic Circuit from Grundarfjörður
Set out by coach to circle Snæfellsjokull National Park, capturing vistas of glacier-capped peaks, black-sand beaches like Djúpalónssandur, and rugged lava fields skirting the sea. Pause at the sea arches and bird-haunted cliffs of Arnarstapi, and glimpse tidy fishing hamlets anchored by centuries of Atlantic harvests.
Often described as “Iceland in miniature,” the peninsula concentrates the island’s drama into one coastline, with views toward iconic Kirkjufell. This is an optional excursion at additional cost and is bookable on tour.
Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss Photography Walk
Walk with a local guide to compose classic angles of Kirkjufell and the ribboning falls of Kirkjufellsfoss. Practice framing, long-exposure techniques, and foreground-to-peak compositions on a dedicated photography walk along trails that showcase this perfectly conical mountain from multiple viewpoints.
Hear how volcanic layers shaped its profile and learn safe footing around slick rocks and spray. Weather changes quickly, rewarding patience with shifting light and mood. This is an optional experience at additional cost and is bookable on tour.
Longyearbyen Panoramic Orientation
Explore Svalbard’s main town on a guided panoramic tour, tracing pastel-painted houses along Adventfjorden views and the stark ridgelines that frame this high-Arctic settlement. Hear how an Arctic coal-mining heritage evolved into a hub for science and exploration, and keep an eye out for the gentle, short-legged Svalbard reindeer that often wander near the roadways.
Gain practical insight into life at 78°N—from permafrost foundations to polar-night routines—while your Expedition Team sets the scene for the voyage ahead. This concise orientation helps you get your bearings and appreciate Longyearbyen’s rugged setting before heading into the wilderness.
