Additional information
Gerlache Strait Scenic Sailing & Whale Watching
Explore the mirror-calm waters of the Gerlache Strait, where serrated peaks and glaciers pour to the sea and humpbacks advertise their presence with whale blows. Drift past tabular bergs and jade growlers, scanning for porpoising penguins while soft, late-season light paints a lingering sunset over the peninsula.
Named for Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache, this krill-rich corridor funnels life between Anvers and Brabant Islands and the Danco Coast. Naturalists decode feeding behavior and seabird flight lines, turning a serene transit into a masterclass in Antarctic ecology.
Port Stanley Community Walk & Historic Dockyard Museum
Join a hosted stroll through Stanley’s waterfront, passing the tidy Jubilee Villas gardens to Christ Church Cathedral and its iconic whalebone arch. Continue to the Historic Dockyard Museum to trace maritime lifeways, shipwreck tales, and the daily rhythms of this wind-bent capital set beside a kelp-fringed harbour.
Local insight brings context to remote-island resilience—Victorian facades, weathered jetsam, and memorials that speak to centuries of seafaring. It’s a compact walk rich in community character and South Atlantic storylines.
Saunders Island Wildlife Landing: Rockhoppers & Albatross
Land by Zodiac at Saunders Island, where beaches and low dunes give way to colonies of Rockhopper Penguins and nesting Black-browed Albatross. At the famed Neck, watch rockhoppers vault seaweed-slick stones while albatrosses wheel overhead, their cliff-top colonies alive with courtship calls and sea-spray scent.
Rugged headlands around Mount Richards frame sweeping views once favored by early settlers. Guides set a gentle pace to minimize disturbance, letting you read the rookery’s rhythms and appreciate the choreography of life on the wind.
Science Centre Lectures & Citizen Science
Discover the onboard Science Centre and join a polar lecture series spanning ice dynamics, wildlife behavior, exploration history, and the Southern Ocean’s role in Earth’s climate. Peer through microscopes at phytoplankton and krill, the tiny engines powering the region’s vast food webs.
Contribute to Citizen Science projects by logging seabird sightings, cloud cover, or whale photographs used by researchers. This collaborative approach turns curiosity into data, deepening understanding while helping protect the places you sail through.
Creative Workshops at Sea: Wildlife Art & Nautical Knots
Channel the voyage’s energy in hands-on sessions, from wildlife painting to tying classic nautical knots. Sketch penguin postures, master a bowline, or practice decorative ropework—skills that bring patience and precision to life as the ship hums through the Southern Ocean.
Guided by your team, these workshops celebrate seafaring heritage and close observation. Field sketches become visual journals, while rope techniques connect modern travelers to age-old maritime craft.
Photography Masterclass & Field Tips
Refine your craft with a professional photographer: expose for snow without losing texture, compose against blue ice, and anticipate wildlife behavior. Deck practice and small group image clinics help you harness soft polar glow and fleeting golden-hour light for crisp, story-rich frames.
Expect practical, ethical guidance—steady stances on moving decks, fog-resistant workflow, and low-impact approaches—so your images honor the wildlife while capturing the atmosphere that defines high-latitude travel.
Sea Kayaking Among Antarctic Icebergs
Paddle in small groups on a guided sea kayaking adventure, slipping into quiet polar bays where brash ice tinkers against your hull and penguins porpoise nearby. Thread along the flanks of grounded icebergs, feeling the cold bloom of the water and the vast, white silence around you.
This optional experience is at additional cost, weather and safety dependent, with dry suits and equipment provided. Places are limited; it’s bookable on tour with your Expedition Team.
Peninsula Valdés Wildlife Reserve Excursion
Travel from Puerto Madryn to Peninsula Valdés, a starkly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Patagonian steppe meets cliffs and sheltered gulfs. Scan beaches and headlands for sea lions, elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, guanacos, and rheas while guides interpret tracks and shoreline ecology.
This optional excursion is at additional cost and bookable on tour. Wildlife varies by season, but sweeping viewpoints and natural history context make the reserve a compelling counterpoint to your polar days.
Antarctic Zodiac Landings & Ice Cruises
Join a Zodiac landing on the South Shetland Islands or the Antarctic Peninsula, stepping onto shingle beaches where penguin colonies bustle beneath towering ice cliffs. Glide through narrow channels strewn with brash ice and glittering bergy bits as guides point out gentoo trails, hauled-out seals, and ethereal blue ice; a moment to pause for photos and reflection.
Learn how landings protect fragile ecosystems, from biosecurity boot scrubs to wildlife approach etiquette. Hear the distant crack of calving glaciers, feel katabatic breezes, and watch skuas wheel overhead—immersive polar hours that anchor your expedition with raw, sensory immediacy.
