Additional information
Gerlache Strait Scenic Navigation & Glacier Vistas
Sail through towering peaks and luminous ice as you enjoy scenic navigation through the Gerlache Strait, a maze of mirror-still channels and tide-etched bergs. From deck and observation lounges, watch for orcas, humpbacks, and rafts of penguins porpoising alongside the ship.
Named for Adrien de Gerlache, this corridor frames classic Antarctic vistas—sheer granite spires, calving glacier faces, and purple alpenglow. Photographers prize the low sun and glassy waters that double every reflection.
South Shetland Islands Landings & Volcanic Landscapes
Explore the South Shetland Islands, where volcanic shores meet seabird-filled skies. Cruise by Zodiac beneath basalt headlands and, conditions permitting, land to scan chinstrap and gentoo penguins, giant petrels, and lounging fur seals. On calm days, ice arches and lava-rimmed coves create striking backdrops.
These islands lie closest to South America and carry the imprint of 19th-century sealing history. Their comparatively mild microclimate nurtures bright lichens and hardy moss beds, adding splashes of color to black-sand beaches and wave-polished rocks.
Drake Passage Seabird Watching & Ocean Talks
Cross the storied Drake Passage with the Expedition Team on hand for open-deck wildlife spotting sessions. Scan the wake for dolphins and the horizon for wandering albatross, giant petrels, and prions mastering the winds.
Between sightings, join engaging ocean talks that decode currents, fronts, and Antarctic food webs, and learn simple techniques for seabird identification. Feel the rhythm of the Southern Ocean while building the skills to read this vast, living seascape.
Polar Lectures & Science Centre Discovery
Deepen your understanding of the White Continent as you join expert-led lectures and hands-on sessions in the ship’s Science Centre. Peer through microscopes to examine krill and phytoplankton—the tiny engines powering Antarctic life—and handle rock samples shaped by ice.
Talks span exploration history, plate tectonics, wildlife behavior, and fieldcraft for safe, responsible exploration. The result is practical knowledge you can apply on deck and ashore, enriching every iceberg view and wildlife encounter.
Citizen Science & Photography Workshops at Sea
Contribute meaningfully to the voyage by taking part in Citizen Science projects—cloud observations, seabird counts, and whale-photo IDs that feed real research. Your contributions help scientists track climate signals and migration patterns across the Southern Ocean.
Sharpen your eye in small-group sessions offering professional photography coaching. Practice exposure, composition, and focusing techniques to capture the golden light on brash ice, breaching whales, and fast-moving penguins during landings and from the rail.
Port Stanley Community Walk & Museum Visit
Explore the islands’ capital on a guided Port Stanley community walk, tracing pretty lanes to Jubilee Villas gardens and the waterfront. Step inside or photograph Christ Church Cathedral and Whalebone Arch, then continue to the Historic Dockyard Museum to browse exhibits on maritime life and natural history.
Along the way, hear stories of kelpers, sheep-farming traditions, and wartime resilience that shape this remote community. Expect sea-breeze views, colorful cottages, and time for a café stop or local crafts.
Saunders Island & West Point Island Wildlife Landings
Venture ashore on Saunders Island and West Point Island, two privately run sheep stations famed for wildlife. Hike over heathered slopes to the cliff-rimmed Devil’s Nose colony, where Black-browed albatross and rockhopper penguins nest side by side. Watch courtship displays, careful landings on the wind, and rockhoppers’ agile cliff scrambles.
On beaches and dunes, look for King and Gentoo penguins, imperial shags, and passing Peale’s and Commerson’s dolphins. Your guides manage safe distances and route choices, balancing superb viewing with minimal disturbance.
Antarctic Sea Kayaking Among Icebergs
Slip into polar waters to kayak among the icebergs, gliding through quiet coves and narrow leads at eye level with sculpted blue ice. A small-group polar guide sets the pace, scouts for wildlife, and shares paddling tips as seals surface and terns wheel overhead.
All gear is provided and participation is weather- and space-limited; prior kayaking experience is recommended. This optional activity is at additional cost, bookable on tour.
Valdés Peninsula Wildlife Safari from Puerto Madryn
Travel across the UNESCO-listed Peninsula Valdés, a vast wildlife sanctuary of salt flats, cliffs, and surf-washed bays. Scan the Patagonian steppe and wind-carved coast for elephant seals, South American sea lions, guanacos, rheas, and abundant shorebirds at key viewpoints and rookeries.
Learn about conservation challenges and the peninsula’s unique geology at interpretive stops with a local naturalist. Distances are significant and wildlife varies by season. This guided excursion is at additional cost, bookable on tour.
Antarctic Zodiac Ice Cruises & Shore Landings
Discover Antarctica on a small-boat adventure as you join a Zodiac ice cruise through glassy bays, weaving among brash ice and sculpted bergs. Land on pebbled shores to step ashore with the Expedition Team and approach bustling penguin rookeries while keeping a respectful distance from seals and nesting birds.
Guides follow IAATO guidelines and select sites according to conditions, with possibilities that may include Cuverville Island or Half Moon Island. Expect echoing glacier cliffs, whale blows on the horizon, and crystalline late-season light that reveals deep blues in the ice.
