Additional information

Travel by motorboat to Philae and explore the island temple complex dedicated to Isis. Approaching across the water reveals its colonnades and stone gateways against Aswan’s distinctive granite-fringed landscape.

The temples were relocated to their present island site to protect them from flooding following the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Their carved scenes preserve traditions of worship that endured into the later centuries of ancient Egyptian religion.

Meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers over drinks and small bites in Cairo. This hosted gathering offers an easy introduction to the people sharing your small-group journey.

Hear what lies ahead across Egypt’s ancient sites and Nile landscapes while getting to know your group in a relaxed setting. It is a chance to begin exchanging questions and interests before the guided exploration starts.

Explore the Valley of the Kings with an Egyptologist, discovering the royal burial ground where New Kingdom pharaohs were laid to rest in tombs cut into the Theban hills. See how painted chambers and funerary symbols expressed beliefs about the afterlife.

View the Colossi of Memnon, two monumental seated statues of Amenhotep III that once guarded the entrance to his mortuary temple. Together, these sites reveal the scale of ancient Thebes on the Nile’s west bank.

Walk through Karnak with your Egyptologist, taking in its monumental pylons, obelisks and avenue of ram-headed sphinxes. In the Great Hypostyle Hall, towering columns crowd the space like a stone forest, their carved surfaces recording the ambitions of successive rulers.

Developed over many centuries, Karnak was a major religious centre of ancient Thebes, devoted principally to Amun-Ra. Its extraordinary scale makes the rituals and royal power of pharaonic Egypt tangible.

Cruise the Nile aboard a dahabiyya, a smaller, traditional-style riverboat that brings you close to the changing life along its banks. From the deck, watch palm groves, cultivated fields and riverside villages pass against the desert horizon.

The vessel’s intimate scale suits small-group travel and allows access to riverside sites beyond the busiest stops. Time on the water is part of the experience: a quieter perspective on the river that has connected Egyptian communities for millennia.

Visit the Temple of Edfu, one of Egypt’s best-preserved ancient temples, dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god. Walk beneath its imposing entrance pylon and examine the carved walls, courts and sanctuary within.

Built during the Ptolemaic period, the temple preserves detailed scenes of ceremonies and the mythic struggle between Horus and Seth. Its remarkably intact structure helps bring the workings of an ancient Egyptian temple into focus.

Travel by boat to Al Ramady Island for an open-air Egyptian dinner on a small sand island in the Nile. Sit down with your group to dishes such as grilled meats, seasonal salads, mezze and freshly baked bread.

The riverside setting makes this more than an ordinary meal: evening light, open sky and the surrounding water provide a distinct sense of place. Sharing familiar Egyptian flavours outdoors offers a convivial way to experience life beside the river.

Go ashore at Gabal El Silsila to explore a small sanctuary beneath sandstone cliffs on a narrow stretch of the Nile. Walk among rock-cut chapels and reliefs while your local expert explains the site’s place in Egypt’s monumental history.

Ancient quarries here supplied sandstone for major temples, including those at Karnak and Edfu. Seeing the source of their building stone gives this quieter riverside landscape a powerful connection to Egypt’s grander monuments.

Explore the double temple of Kom Ombo, set above the Nile and dedicated to two deities: Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus the Elder. Its paired courts and sanctuaries make the building’s unusual dual purpose visible as you walk through it.

Visit the nearby Crocodile Museum to see how the animal was revered in ancient Egyptian religion. Reliefs, temple architecture and the river setting together illuminate the beliefs of a community closely tied to the Nile.

Explore a local bazaar in Aswan, browsing stalls of spices, textiles and handcrafted goods. Take in the colours and scents of a market that offers a lively contrast to the city’s ancient monuments.

Aswan has long been a meeting point for people and trade along the Nile. Time among its market stalls offers a glimpse of everyday commerce and a chance to look more closely at the materials and styles found in local craftwork.

Join an Egyptian cooking demonstration with the onboard chef during your time in Aswan. Watch how familiar ingredients are prepared and combined, and ask questions about the techniques and flavours behind classic dishes.

This is one of two included Insight Choice activities: select it if you would like a closer look at Egyptian food culture. The boat’s small-group setting makes the demonstration an approachable exchange with the person preparing meals on board.

Sit down to tea with your dahabiyya captain in Aswan and learn about daily life working on the Nile. Hear how the vessel is navigated and how practical knowledge of the river has been passed between generations.

This is one of two included Insight Choice activities: select it for a personal perspective on the people who keep the boat moving. Conversation with the captain adds a human dimension to the river landscapes seen from the deck.

Meet female artisans at an Aswan women’s cooperative and learn about the skills they develop, including traditional handcraft techniques. See how materials such as palm and bamboo can be put to creative use.

This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® visit introduces a local organisation that supports women seeking skills, community and greater financial independence. Meeting its members connects the finished craftwork to the people and purpose behind it.

Sail the Nile with a local sailor aboard a felucca, the traditional wooden sailing boat familiar along Aswan’s waterfront. Experience the river at a gentler pace, with open views towards its islands, rocky banks and passing boats.

Feluccas have carried people along this stretch of the Nile for generations. The ride offers a direct encounter with a living river tradition and a different perspective from that of a larger cruise vessel.

Join a galabeya party aboard your Nile boat, with music and entertainment hosted by the crew. Travellers can wear a galabeya, the loose traditional robe seen throughout Egypt, and share an informal evening with their small group.

The gathering brings a playful, participatory element to life on the river. Learning about the attire and enjoying music together makes this a hosted cultural experience rather than a standard onboard dinner.

Discover Cairo’s Islamic and Christian heritage on a guided city visit. Explore the Saladin Citadel and the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, whose domes, courtyard and elevated setting make it one of the city’s defining landmarks.

In Coptic Cairo, visit the Hanging Church, built above the gatehouse of a Roman fortress. These sites bring together different chapters of Cairo’s history through their architecture, sacred spaces and enduring religious traditions.

Explore the Giza Plateau with your Egyptologist, seeing the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and viewing the Great Sphinx at close range. Walk among royal monuments whose immense stone forms have defined this desert-edge landscape for more than four millennia.

Enter one of the pyramids to follow its internal passageways towards a burial chamber. The close quarters offer a striking contrast to the monuments’ vast exterior scale and a tangible sense of their purpose as royal tombs.

Explore the Grand Egyptian Museum with your Egyptologist, encountering colossal sculpture, painted coffins and objects from Tutankhamun’s tomb. See the monumental statue of Ramses II and examine artefacts that illuminate ancient Egyptian art, ceremony and daily life.

Near the Giza pyramids, the museum brings together collections spanning thousands of years. Tutankhamun’s funerary treasures give a particularly detailed view of royal craftsmanship and beliefs about the afterlife.

Visit Abu Simbel on an optional excursion from Aswan to see the rock-cut temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari beside Lake Nasser. Stand before the colossal seated figures at the Great Temple and examine the facades carved directly into the sandstone.

The temples were moved to higher ground during the construction of the Aswan High Dam, an extraordinary preservation effort. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour; ask your Travel Director for available arrangements.

See the Giza pyramids illuminated at night during an optional Sound and Light Show. Lighting, narration and music frame the monuments and the Sphinx against the dark desert sky, presenting stories associated with ancient Egypt.

The performance offers a theatrical perspective on landmarks more often encountered in daylight. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour, making it a choice for travellers who would enjoy an evening return to the Giza Plateau.

Cruise the Nile through Cairo by night on an optional dinner outing with entertainment. Watch the riverfront’s lights from the water while sharing a meal away from the bustle of the city’s streets.

The cruise pairs a different view of modern Cairo with an organised evening performance. It is at additional cost and bookable on tour; your Travel Director can provide details of the available cruise and entertainment.
