Additional information

Visit Alstahaug Church, a medieval stone landmark on Alstenøya, and the adjacent Petter Dass Museum, which explores the life and writing of Norway’s baroque poet-priest. Exhibitions are housed in a striking contemporary museum building by Snøhetta.

Stroll the fjord-edge churchyard and reflect on faith, poetry, and the rhythms of coastal life. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour during your time in Sandnessjøen.

Experience the rush as you power across the Helgeland coast by RIB, weaving among skerries towards the Svartisen glacier north of the Arctic Circle. Disembark below the ice and follow a scenic path along a milky-turquoise lake, edging closer to blue crevasses and polished rock.

Along the way, your expert leader explains how the ice shaped this valley within Saltfjellet–Svartisen’s protected landscapes, and how its retreat mirrors wider Arctic change. Ample time is built in to pause for photos and reflection.

Learn sea-kayaking techniques from local guides before you paddle sheltered channels between islets and skerries around Støtt. Glide over clear, brackish shallows while you watch for white-tailed sea eagles and seals, and feel the hush of the quiet skerries broken only by the splash of your paddle.

Hear how islanders read tides, winds, and light to navigate these waterways year-round, and how traditional fishing shaped life on the outer coast. Expect calm conditions and a steady pace ideal for photography.

Set off to cycle quiet island roads linking Dønna and Herøy, passing boathouses, wooden churches, and sea meadows with constant views of the Seven Sisters mountains. Break for lunch at the characterful Skolo old schoolhouse café, where wide windows frame Helgeland’s serrated skyline.

Continue across bridges and causeways with sightlines to UNESCO-listed Vegaøyan, Træna, and Lovund. Drop into the whimsical Etcetera Botanical Extravaganza for creative florals and local treats—an offbeat snapshot of contemporary coastal culture.

Join a guided ridge walk along a protected green corridor above Sandnessjøen, where lichen-splashed rock and wind-brushed heather open to soaring Atlantic views. The panorama takes in Dønna, Herøy, and the serried profiles of the Seven Sisters.

Hear how local folklore tells of a troll-king legend that turned these peaks to stone, and learn how Helgeland’s raw geology inspires poetry, place names, and stories. The route is unhurried, with frequent pauses for photos and interpretation.

Step into a reconstructed Viking longhouse for a living-history encounter with coastal chieftain life. Engage with hands-on demonstrations—from simple woodcraft to bread-baking—and handle replicas that illuminate trade, seafaring, and status in the North Atlantic world.

Costumed guides weave saga-inspired storytelling with archaeology to bring the era alive. This experience is at additional cost and bookable on tour during your time in Sandnessjøen.

Discover island heritage on a hosted visit to Støtt’s old trading post museum, where you’ll meet your hosts and browse charts, ledgers, and maritime tools that shaped Helgeland’s seafaring identity. Displays evoke the Norwegian stockfish trade that once linked these remote shores with markets across Europe.

Later, celebrate the start of your adventure with a three-course welcome dinner showcasing North Atlantic flavors—think line-caught cod, Arctic char, and seasonal berries—served in an intimate, coastal setting.
