A Taste of the English Riviera
Enjoy time in two of Devon’s seaside and market-town favourites. Browse Totnes’s independent shops and historic streets before heading to Brixham, where a colourful harbour and classic seaside views await. With free time in both, wander, shop, grab a coffee or simply soak up the atmosphere.
Half Day
Brixham Harbour Stroll & Seaside Views
Stroll the working harbour of Brixham, where colour-washed cottages climb the hillside and trawlers unload along the fish quay. Follow the waterfront past cafés and chandlers, with views to the breakwater and the Tor Bay panorama. Browse small galleries or pause for photos by bobbing boats.
Hear tales of privateers and trawlermen as you spot the replica Golden Hind in the inner harbour and the cliffs of Berry Head beyond. Salt air, gull cries and bright hulls frame a classic Devon scene.
Totnes Castle Entry
Visit Totnes Castle, an English Heritage gem crowning the town’s hilltop. Climb the grassy motte and the stone shell keep for sweeping views over the Dart valley. Simple, sturdy walls evoke the frontier days of Norman rule. A compact site makes for an easy, rewarding stop.
Raised soon after the Conquest to command river trade, this classic motte-and-bailey reveals Totnes’s strategic past. Entry is at additional cost and bookable on tour, with time to explore exhibits and read on-site panels.
Golden Hind Museum Ship (Brixham)
Step aboard the Golden Hind, a full-size replica of Sir Francis Drake’s galleon. Explore below-deck galleries, handle ropes and peer at cannon, imagining Tudor crews navigating by dead-reckoning on open seas. Families and history fans find plenty to discover.
Moored in Brixham’s inner harbour, the ship tells the story of Drake’s circumnavigation and England’s seafaring age. Entry is at additional cost and bookable on tour; allow time for photos on deck with the harbour as your backdrop.
Totnes Historic Town Walk & Market Quarter
Explore Totnes on a guided orientation walk along its steep High Street and The Narrows, where independent boutiques fill medieval-fronted buildings. Trace lanes towards Totnes Castle above the River Dart, and note cafés, markets and viewpoints to enjoy later. Your Tour Manager shares local tips on landmarks and handy shortcuts up the hillside.
Hear how a 12th-century market charter shaped the town, from wool prosperity to today’s eco-minded artisans. Look for carved doorways, slate-hung cottages and street buskers on market days, capturing Totnes’s quietly independent spirit.
